Thinking about downsizing your home? These three tips will help you get organized and purge nonessentials so you have enough room in your new place.
3 Tips to Downsize Your Home
When you’re moving to a smaller home, you’ll need to cut loose items you don’t use often. Whether that means putting them in storage, donating them or throwing them out is up to you – but for most people, it’s a little bit of a squeeze to move into a smaller house. These tips will help you prepare.
Downsizing Tip #1: Sort Your Stuff Into Categories
You need four categories:
- Keep
- Sell
- Donate
- Trash
Go through each room in your home marking “Keep” items with a color-coded sticker, and removing items from the room that you’re going to sell, donate or throw away. To keep things simple, only do one room at a time – don’t rush to go through each room without taking your time.
Downsizing Tip #2: Follow the 1-Year Rule
Go back through your “Keep” items. If you find something you haven’t used in a year, then think about donating or selling it to someone who will use it. (Every little bit counts when you’re moving to a smaller home!)
Downsizing Tip #3: Give Yourself a Deadline
Time slips by quickly when you’re moving, so give yourself a deadline to have all your belongings sorted. Aim for two weeks before moving day so you’ll still have plenty of time to pack.
