This post is the second part of a series on DIY home security. The first post is here.
Before you do anything, you’ll have to decide which system is right for your home. If you are looking to only monitor the main entry points of the house—a video doorbell may be just what you are looking for. These devices can do anything from trigger motion alerts, take wide range videos in real time and allow you to “answer the door” remotely with two-way communication. It is important to note, these systems, while “wirelessly” connected to your internet, offer more features if hard wired to your existing doorbell. The video doorbells are offered at many price points and can be purchased at your local electronics or big box hardware store.
If you are in need of total home security— this can still be achieved wirelessly, along with the help of your smartphone. Many of the wireless video doorbells come with the option of purchasing additional cameras, so you can see every point of the house. There are also many wireless security systems that are made just for this purpose, and require a little more money upfront. These still run wirelessly, but most require an additional DVR for recording. This type of camera covers a wider range of your home and offers a lot of options from night vision to tilt viewing. Sold mostly in kits with multiple cameras, these systems still allow for remote viewing, so you can see who is around while you are away.
