Along with the excitement of buying a home comes the drudgery of preparing to move. Moving day is more likely to go off without a hitch if you’re properly prepared. Avoiding some common mistakes while you’re packing to move can help reduce the stress of this exciting but trying time.
Packing Mistake #1: Putting Off Your Packing
There’s no better way to ensure you’ll break or misplace some of your things than by rushing to pack everything at the least minute. Packing’s no fun—but that’s no reason to procrastinate. Start boxing up things you won’t need as early as possible.
Packing Mistake #2: Not Using Enough Padding
When in doubt, another layer of wrapping around your fragile items probably won’t hurt. Be sure to stuff empty corners or spaces inside each box with crumpled paper or some other packing material to prevent items from shifting during the move. You can purchase packing materials, or repurpose some household items to protect your breakables. Wrap items with:
- Bubble wrap
- Newsprint
- Foam padding
- Towels or linens
- Casual clothing
Packing Mistake #3: Incomplete Labeling
Few things can be as frustrating as having to purchase a needed item you already own, but can’t locate. Use large, self-stick labels to list the contents of each box in detail, rather than only the room it’s destined for. You’ll thank yourself later when you need a particular tool or utensil before you’re unpacked in your new home.
Packing Mistake #4: Not Separating Essentials
Each family member should have enough clothing, toiletries and medication for a few days. Your truck could be delayed, or you may be too tired to unpack immediately after the move. Think about the things you use every day and consider keeping those items with you as well. You may want certain things available immediately on arrival in your new home:
- Snacks and drinks
- Coffeemaker and coffee (don’t forget cups or your trusty travel mug)
- Towels
- Shower curtain
- A few cooking and eating utensils (even if it’s just paper plates and napkins for pizza)
