You might be surprised to learn that some people can actually write off pet expenses on their taxes.
While this isn’t tax advice—we’re not tax professionals, we’re real estate agents—it might be pretty eye-opening if you’re a pet parent. You should talk to a tax professional if you’re thinking about writing off the costs of pet care and maintenance.
Can You Write Off Your Pets on Your Taxes?
The Internal Revenue Service recognizes several instances in which you can claim your pet expenses as a write-off. The most notable: if you have a guide dog or support animal.
According to the IRS, “You can include in medical expenses the costs of buying, training, and maintaining a guide dog or other service animal to assist a visually impaired or hearing disabled person, or a person with other physical disabilities. In general, this includes any costs, such as food, grooming, and veterinary care, incurred in maintaining the health and vitality of the service animal so that it may perform its duties.”
Can You Get a Tax Break for Moving With Pets?
If you bought a house for sale in Lake City and moved here for work, you may be able to write off the costs of moving your pet… even if it’s a fish.
You may also be able to write off the expenses related to having a guard dog if you have a home office, and possibly even the cost of having a cat that keeps the pests away (although in both cases, you’ll have to be prepared to back up your claims).
