A saltwater swimming pool isn’t really 100 percent saltwater. It is actually a pool that uses salt to make its own chlorine, instead of putting store-bought chlorine into the pool.
The chlorine generated from salt is a lot less irritating and harmful because it is pure chlorine. Commercial chlorine is often as much as 90% other chemicals. Mishandling commercial chlorine can result in burns, damage to the lungs and eyes, even death. It is also really harmful to the environment.
Saltwater pools use chlorine generator technology to pass saltwater through an electric salt chlorinator cell which creates liquid chlorine for the pool.
When used properly, chlorine levels in saltwater pools are safer, more sanitary, and more consistent than standard chlorine pools. The pool is also automatically sanitized without handling dangerous chemicals.
One drawback of saltwater pools is they are not very efficient. On average they require two to five hundred pounds of salt a year to stay sanitary and the pool’s pumps, filter, and pool equipment need to be constantly running. A common maintenance problem is mineral build up on the chlorinator cells.
