Buying a home in Lake City is an exciting process—but you can’t forget to make sure it’s as secure as possible.
That all starts with your home search.
How to Make Sure Your Home is Safe… Before You Buy
It’s always a good idea to get neighborhood data before you buy a home, but don’t limit yourself to numerical data.
Instead, drive through neighborhoods you’re interested in at all hours of the day. Start early to see what the activity levels are (especially during the week) and don’t forget to drive through in the evening, too. You might be surprised at the differences you see between the afternoons and evenings (and all the other times, as well).
If you can, get to know the neighbors around the home you’re interested in buying. You can gain a lot of insight just from chatting with people who already live in the community. Also, getting to know your neighbors is safer; you’ll look out for them, and they’ll look out for you.
If you can, conduct a “home security audit” before you purchase a home. Check all the home’s entry points—doors and windows—and identify locks that are outdated or worse, not functional. Many home security professionals recommend electronic locks so you can assign separate key codes to different people (and that way, you can also track who’s coming and going from your home… and when they’re coming and going).
Once you’re moved in, you can purchase a home security system through a major vendor or you can set up a DIY system that doesn’t include monitoring. In many cases, a loud siren is enough to scare away predators—and a sign in the yard saying that your home is protected by a security system can prevent them from even trying.
