If you’re buying a new home, particularly if it’s your first one, you need to know that there are all kinds of dos and don’ts for the process. Naturally, your Realtor® will be there to guide you every step of the way – but it still a good idea to familiarize yourself with what you should and should not do.
Do look at several houses before you make a decision.
While you may fall in love with the first house you see, you owe it to yourself (remember, you may be taking out a 30-year mortgage) to check out several potential homes before you make your final choice.
Do research the neighborhood.
When real estate agents say it’s all about location, they’re right. If your dream house is in the wrong neighborhood, it’s not going to be your dream house for long. Whether you’re looking for something in a quiet, established neighborhood with tree lined streets or you want a place where there are always kids laughing outside, it’s important that you research potential neighborhoods before you settle on a home.
Don’t feel like you need to buy the most expensive home in the neighborhood.
You might have a tough time reselling the home if it’s surrounded by homes that don’t match its size, style or aesthetics. Even if you don’t plan to sell the home, it’s still a good idea to make sure that you’re not going to make any waves if you decide to do so.
