If you’re like most people, moving in to your new home is the culmination of all your hard work finding and purchasing the house or condominium of your dreams. Most likely, you can’t wait to get your belongings moved in so you can get settled. However, there are a few things you might consider doing first.
Change the Locks
For your safety and peace of mind, you should have all the locks changed as soon as possible after taking possession of the home. There’s no way to know how many people have extra keys. Don’t forget to get new padlocks as well, for gates and outbuildings.
Pre-Move Floor Care
If your new home has any floor care needs, this is the perfect time to address them. Whether you need carpets cleaned, hardwoods refinished or tile sealed, each of these tasks goes more quickly and easily without obstacles. While you may be eager to get your furnishings arranged, it may be a good idea to take care of your flooring first.
Prepping and Painting
Do you have plans to paint the interior of your new home? If you’re doing it yourself, you’ll find it’s easier without the need to dodge a tarp-covered pile of furniture in the middle of each room. If you’re paying a contractor, be sure to let them know the home will be empty when you paint! Many professional house painters will offer a lower bid to do a job that doesn’t require moving and covering your belongings.
