If you’re thinking about selling your North Florida home, you probably already know you’ll want to spruce up your yard to boost curb appeal. Most prospective buyers will drive by a home before requesting a showing, so an attractive, low-maintenance yard is your best chance to make a good first impression.
Few plantings are as easy to maintain as ornamental grasses. Available in varying heights, the right ornamental grass will grow nearly anywhere, from poor sand to boggy peat. Most varieties thrive in our plant hardiness zone and will often look well-established within weeks after planting.
Full Sun and Well-Drained Soil
For sunny spots and sandy soil, choose feather reedgrass or fountaingrass. These tall grasses make an excellent focal point or backdrop for flowerbeds. For even greater height and drama, try revannagrass, which will grow as high as 12 feet. Blue fescue or little bluestem are good choices for areas where you prefer a shorter ornamental grass.
Partial Shade
Shady areas present a bit more challenge for gardeners. Purple millet does well in shady areas that get a little sun each day. Its rich purple foliage is beautiful and the seeds attract many species of birds. The shorter, mounding Japanese forestgrass also tolerates shade well, and looks fantastic as a border around footpaths.
Ornamental Grasses for Damp Soil
A spreading prairie grass, cordgrass is the ideal choice for wet areas. If you have a pond or stream that needs sprucing up, this six-to-seven-foot-tall variety can be just the thing. Cordgrass is also perfect for planting around drainage pools or ditches to improve the appearance of the area.
