If you’re moving to Lake City and need daycare, there are several options available. But how do you choose the one that’s right for your family, your budget and your goals?
What to Look for in a Daycare Center When You Move
When you’re checking out local daycare centers, it’s always a good idea to visit in-person. You want to get a good feel for how they conduct day-to-day operations, and you’ll need to see how the caregivers interact with the kids there. Pay attention to your first impression, because it’s usually right – and this is one area where you need to trust your gut.
While conducting your research, you’ll also need to look for:
- A good reputation. You can ask the daycare center for references, and it’s always a good idea to check out online reviews.
- Ground rules. Any good daycare center can provide you with a written copy of its policies. Sure, flexibility is important – but they need to have firm ground rules in place so you can see that they take their responsibilities seriously.
- A sick child policy. You need to know which illnesses will keep kids out of daycare (including yours).
- An open-door policy. A daycare center without an open door policy, or one that doesn’t encourage parents to stop by unannounced, may not be right for your family.
- A good curriculum. Age-appropriate curriculum can just mean a good structure – time for physical activity, reading sessions or napping – and it should allow for meals, individual activities and free time.
- Caring and qualified staff members. It’s good for daycare staff members to have backgrounds in early childhood development, but that’s not always necessary. However, it is necessary for them to have training in CPR, pediatric first aid and other emergency response techniques.
