How Much Do You Know About Watering Plants?

How Much Do You Know About Watering Plants?

The newly-designed landscape of your home is everything you’ve always wanted, and you plan to take good care of your outdoor investment. But as you tend to your landscape be aware that there are certain watering concepts for plants, trees and shrubs that are based on fallacies, while there are others that are based on facts. Avoid these watering myths so that you can best maintain your landscape.

Overhead Watering on a Hot Day Can Burn Leaves

If you water your plants on a sunny day the notion that water droplets that form on the leaves will magnify sunlight and burn the leaves simply isn’t true. In fact the sun evaporates such water droplets.

Genuine threats for leaf damage may be presented by insect or disease problems, too much or too little moisture in the soil, weather conditions like frost and wind, and fertilizer burn from a synthetic fertilizer that’s not properly diluted.

Perhaps the only thing to be mindful of when watering plants on a sunny day is the amount of moisture that may be lost to evaporation.

Drought-Resistant Plants Don’t Need to Be Watered

So you’ve planted drought-resistant flowers in your garden and showered them with big gulps of water to get them started. They should be good to go now, right? Don’t be misled into thinking that they’ll no longer need your attention because they are drought-resistant.

The roots of your container-grown drought-resistant plant have been confined to the shape of the pot. Until the roots have some time to grow into the surrounding soil they will need a consistent supply of water throughout their first growing season. So during that period you should water them as you wood your annual flowers.

During their second and subsequent growing seasons they may require some supplemental water, but only during extended periods of drought. It’s also important for you to know that simply because a plant is drought-resistant does not mean that it doesn’t manage better with a regular supply of water.
