So where do you start?
How to Prepare Your Lake City Home for Sale
Start by decluttering your home. (It’s not that yours is particularly cluttered; we tell everyone to declutter!) That means everything you haven’t used in the past six months has to go. You don’t have to sell it, donate it, or throw it out, but you do need to take it out of the house before buyers start coming through.
Next, put away your personal effects. Take down family photos and décor that’s highly personal to your family, or that potential buyers might find offensive. Leave up neutral décor, though, which can help you sell faster (and at a better price).
Make sure all your rooms have a clearly defined purpose, too. Don’t keep the treadmill in the home office, where you also keep your guest bed. Your buyers want to envision each room as having its own, distinct purpose, so make it easier on them. (You might want to think about renting a storage unit while your house is on the market—and look at it this way: You’re getting a head start on all your packing, too.)
Clean out your refrigerator, cabinets, and cupboards. Thin out the clothes in your closet to make it look larger, as well. Buyers are going to open every door and peek around every corner, so you want everything to look as roomy—and as neat—as possible.
Once you’re done organizing everything in the cabinets, cupboards, and closets, scrub the house from top to bottom. Buyers want to see that you’ve taken great care of the house, and to show them that, you may need to vacuum and dust every day, scour the sinks, and make sure there isn’t a spot of grime anywhere.
