If you could decorate your home in a way that made it both stylish and easier to clean, would you hesitate to do it? We didn’t think so, either. Here are three design choices that can make your home easier to clean.
Selecting Elevated Furniture
Furniture that has legs, to be clear. If you’re in the market for a few new pieces keep in mind that legs on sofas, coffee tables, credenzas, and many other pieces, can make it easy to vacuum and sweep underneath. And if you’ve got one of those handy robotic vacuums, cleaning the floors under your furniture will be that much easier.
Picking the Right Paint Finish
Although a matte finish has a chalky appearance that makes it ideal for concealing surface imperfections—since it absorbs light instead of reflecting it, mattes tend to blemish when wiped with force. So if you’ve got young kids and a high likelihood for fingerprints and crayon markings on your walls, a matte finish may not be right for you.
Instead, consider an eggshell finish. It has more of a shine than a matte paint and can be wiped without blemishing, which makes it easier to keep clean. If you need even more durability choose a satin finish, since it can endure a light scrubbing. Satins are best for children’s rooms and high-traffic areas like hallways. They’re also great for woodwork.
Consider a semi-gloss finish for wood surfaces like cabinets, doors, and trim.
Choosing Durable Sofa Upholstery
When it comes to a sofa that’s easy to clean, upholstery selection is key.
Leather is easy to wipe clean, but spills should be mopped-up right away. You’ll also need to condition the leather once yearly.
If you’re more inclined to fabrics, choose ones that have been treated with a stain repellant.
Slipcovers can make it easier to keep your sofa looking its best. If a cover becomes stained, or needs to be freshened up, you can simply give it a whirl in the washing machine. Darker-colored covers and those with patterns are better at hiding stains.
