If you’re like many people, you’ll be hiring movers for your upcoming move – but before you do, there are three things you should know.
Whether you’re moving into a condo, a farmhouse or a single-family home in one of Lake City’s most popular neighborhoods, the movers you hire will do their best to get your belongings from Point A to Point B in perfect condition – but there are three things they wish you knew:
- Moving takes longer than you think
- You should label your boxes to save yourself time and effort
- Your pets should be locked away on moving day
Here’s a closer look at each.
Issue #1 Your Movers Want You to Know About: Moving Takes Longer Than You Think
Some people pack up all their own belongings and only rely on a moving company for the heavy lifting, while others want the movers to do everything. In either case, it’s important that you know that moving is a process that takes time. Even a “short” move across town can take several hours.
Pro Tip: Choose high-quality boxes for your move. The better your boxes are, the more likely your belongings are to make it to your new home intact.
Issue #2 Your Movers Want You to Know About: You Should Label Your Boxes
When you label your boxes, you’ll save yourself a lot of time on the other side. You’ll save yourself a lot of stress, too. You won’t have to dig through a dozen boxes to find one small kitchen tool, and you can unpack at your own pace based on which items you need (rather than making a huge mess by going through boxes when you don’t have time to commit to the job of unpacking).
You can use a color-coding system to get your boxes in the right rooms, and you can list each box’s contents on the top with a permanent marker. Alternatively, you can write a quick list of what’s in every box and tape it to the top of the box.

Issue #3 Your Movers Want You to Know About: Your Pets Should Be Locked Away on Moving Day
Pets get nervous on moving day – even the most calm of them can suffer. Nervous pets do things like bite movers or dart out of doors, which means it’s best if you put them in a separate room that’s blocked off on moving day. (Or, if it’s possible, take them to a friend or family member’s house where they’ll definitely be safe.)
Make sure to mark the door and let each member of the moving crew know that they shouldn’t open it – that way, everyone’s on the same page for keeping your pets contained.
