Ramping up your curb appeal before you sell your home is always a good idea – after all, the exterior of your home is the first thing buyers will see when they pull up for a tour (or when they drive by to determine whether they should schedule a tour of the inside).
Here’s what you need to do.
4 Things to Do Today to Ramp Up Your Curb Appeal
If you’re like most people, you’re pretty conscious about what your home’s exterior looks like – especially if you’re thinking about putting it up for sale. Here are four things you can do today to ramp up your curb appeal:
- Manicure the yard
- Check the gates
- Touch up paint
- Sweep everything
Here’s a closer look at each.
#1. Manicure the yard.
Cut the grass and edge the areas around walkways and porches. Trim the trees and shrubs, and if you’re up for it, plant a few flowers. (You can also use potted plants to spruce up your space.) If you really want a professional touch, hire a landscaper to tackle the job for you.
#2. Check the gates.
Make sure all your fencing is in good repair, and check to make sure the gates work well. If you have squeaky hinges, pull out the oil can – and if latches stick or locks don’t work properly, replace them.
#3. Touch up paint.
If your home’s exterior is painted, look for spots that could use a little TLC. Match the color and do it yourself or hire a local painter (your REALTOR® can help you find a local pro you can trust) to make blemish corrections for you.
#4. Sweep everything.
Sweep the walkway, porch and your deck. You don’t have to power-wash them (although you can, and should, if it’s necessary). Spray these areas down with a hose to make sure they’re clean when buyers come through.
Pro tip: If you splash your windows, make sure you clean them immediately – buyers also like to see squeaky-clean windows from the road!
