You always have the option of hiring a land surveyor who can define property lines. Professional surveyors have education and specialized equipment in determining everything you need to know. Your surveyor will most likely compare historical data with existing markers and come up with accurately defined property lines for you.

Checking the Deed to the Property

Many property deeds include land survey information, including legal descriptions of land, restrictions and easements, and even exact addresses and tax map numbers. This information comes from a professional land surveyor.

Searching Property Survey Records at the Courthouse

You can head to the local courthouse and search property survey records there. Alternatively, they may be available at the property or tax assessor’s office. Although this strategy takes time, it’s a low cost (and sometimes even free) way to get a look at property lines and boundaries.

Talking to Your REALTOR®

Your real estate agent can give you the guidance you need on property lines based on the three methods above. In fact, your agent may be able to look online and find the exact boundaries of the property in question.
