If you’re a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces, you may be eligible for special programs from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to help you start a farm. Here’s what you need to know.
USDA Programs to Help Veterans Start Farming
First things first: Although this isn’t a USDA benefit for veterans, you may be able to use your VA loan benefit to buy a farm for sale in Lake City. In order to qualify, you must be eligible for the VA loan, and the property you want to buy must have a residence on it. You must intend to make the residence on the property your primary residence; that means you will live in it most of the time.
Alternatively, you may be able to use the USDA’s Farm Loan Program. The Farm Loan Program can enable you to finance a complete farming operation, and you could be eligible to use it to purchase or expand an existing farm or ranch.
After you’ve done that, you may be able to use some of these benefits from the U.S. Department of Agriculture:
- Agricultural Conservation Easement Program
- Crop Insurance
- Environmental Quality Incentives Program
- Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program
- SCORE
- Transition Incentives Program
The USDA has a discovery tool for beginning farmers and ranchers that may help you determine which benefits you’re eligible to receive. You can even work with beginning farmer and rancher coordinators – they’re USDA workers who can help you find the right assistance for your operation.
