Musty Smell in Your Closet? Here’s What to Do

Musty Smell in Your Closet? Here's What to Do

Does your closet have a musty odor? Consider these tips to identify and fix the source of the stink.

See If Your Clothes Are the Culprit

The musty odor in your closet may be the result of hanging up, or folding and shelving, freshly-laundered clothes before they’ve had a chance to dry completely. When confined in an airless space, moist pants and shirts can begin to smell due to a combination of moisture and poor ventilation. Probe and inspect your items. If you find that your clothes aren’t the source, you could have a larger issue.

In the future

Make sure your clothes are fully dried before placing them in your closet. To be on the safe side, give your items ample breathing room—don’t tightly pack them.  If you don’t have enough closet space, consider investing in a mobile closet.

Check for Mold or Mildew

Empty your closet and look for the presence of mold or mildew, which is evidence of a moisture problem—perhaps from excess humidity from constantly storing damp clothes, or even a water leak.

If you find mold or mildew

Allow your closet to dry out completely, then fill a spray bottle with a mixture of bleach and water and spray down any mold or mildew patches you find. Scrub the problem areas using a brush. Rinse each area with water, and allow them to dry.

Got a Different Foul Odor? Check for Pests

If your closet smells rank in a different way, droppings from pests could be the source. Snap-on a pair of rubber gloves and thoroughly check your closet—using a flashlight if needed. Examine your clothes for droppings, too.

If you do find evidence of pests, plug up any holes where they may have entered. You’ll likely need to take more extensive pest control measures to rectify the problem.

Keep Your Closet Smelling Fresh

One tried-and-true way to keep your closet smelling fresh is to place cedar bars inside. Another method is to situate satchels of dried spices, or even fragrant bars of soap, inside.

To absorb foul odors poke holes into the lid of a can of coffee, and place the can inside of your closet. Every couple of months, replace the can with a new one.
