If you’re thinking about buying an equestrian property in North Florida (or anywhere else in Florida), you probably have a lot of questions – and one of the first you’ll likely come up with is this: How many acres do you need for a horse in Florida?
Here’s what you need to know.
How Many Acres Do You Need for a Horse in Florida?
More than 500,000 horses live in Florida, and they’re all able to thrive in our climate, grazing on pastures and forage crops throughout the year. Pasture land is ample here near Lake City, as well as in many other locations throughout the state.
It’s important to note that a mature horse might require between 2 and 2.5 acres of pasture to have enough grazing space – but if the pasture is productive and well-managed, particularly during the summer, the same horse may only need 1 to 1.5 acres.
Is 5 Acres Enough for Two Horses?
Five acres may be enough for two horses – particularly if they’re fully grown and the pasture is well-maintained. A good rule of thumb is to aim for at least two acres per horse, and to account for the type of forage material that grows on the land, as well as how healthy the grass is.
However, you have to remember that it all depends on how well-managed the pasture is. If the pasture isn’t irrigated, or if the grass doesn’t grow particularly well, you could need up to 38 acres of land (which is more common in the west, such as Arizona, than it is in Florida) to meet your horse’s forage needs.
