As the saying goes: New Year, new living room. Well, not quite. But if you’re interested in shaking things up a bit for the New Year, and going for a more comfortable and functional—not just pretty—living room, consider these three tips.
Create Zones
You can make a large, impersonal living room take on a cozier feel with the addition of area rugs, which can create comfy gathering hubs within your space. You can position large rugs to accommodate a sofa and chairs, or smaller ones to establish more intimate zones—whether they be a conversation area around a fireplace, or a space in front of a window that offers a picturesque view.
Choose Furniture You Can Really Use
Say goodbye to the days of buying furniture you don’t want to use for fear that you or your guests will mess it up. When picking pieces for your living room this year choose ones that will look even better with use and age. Consider leathers and wood pieces that will develop a patina, as well as metals and other materials that will gain more character over time.
Get Orderly
Where’s the TV remote? Did it fall between the sofa cushions? Who had it last? Where are my car keys? Did I leave them on the kitchen table? These are questions you don’t have to ask this year. The addition of a simple, small basket to hold TV remotes, and a vessel to place car and house keys can help you keep track of items like these, and stay organized.
Baskets can also help you look organized in a pinch. When guests stop by on short notice, they can be great places to stash odds and ends. Temporarily, though.
