About the Lake City Columbia County Historical Museum
The original County Courthouse burned down, unfortunately, and many records were lost in the fire. However, there are still records left – and those indicate that the single-story, rear part of the building existed before 1861. The front portion of the building – the two-story section – was built around 1880, after Mr. John Vinzant bought the property.
The Italianate building is open to the public on Wednesdays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. There are guided tours available, and you can conduct genealogical research there. Occasionally, there’s a historical reenactment in the museum.
There are several rooms in the museum, each with its own purpose:
- The Formal Parlor is furnished with an East Lake settee and chairs, just like it would have featured in the 1800s.
- The Blue-Grey Room honors the Blue-Grey Army, which keeps the museum in operation and features Civil War artifacts.
- The Patriot Room honors all military personnel from every conflict.
- The kitchen is in the rear part of the building and contains miscellaneous items from all eras.
