How Much Land Should You Buy in North Florida?

How Much Land Should You Buy in North Florida?

When you want to buy land in North Florida, there’s no shortage of real estate listings showing you exactly what you can get and how much it’ll cost. But how much land should you buy in North Florida, and should price be the only determining factor in your decision? This guide explains.

How Much Land Should You Buy in North Florida?

The amount of land you need to buy in North Florida depends on what you want to use it for. The following sections outline how much land you may need if you’re considering buying a farm, a horse property, timberland or a recreational property.

How Much Land Should You Buy if You Want a Farm?

If you’re looking to start a farm in North Florida, you’ll need at least 5 acres. You may need more than this depending on what kind of crops or animals you plan to raise. For a small-scale vegetable or fruit farm, you can get by with less land – but for larger operations such as dairy farms, beef cattle farms, orchards, and vineyards, you’ll need a larger plot of land.

The general rules for how much space you need per animal are as follows:

  • Cows need at least 2 acres of pasture per head
  • Sheep need at least .5 acres of pasture per head
  • Hogs need at least 1 acre of pen and pasture space per head
  • Goats need at least .3 acres of pen and pasture space per head

How Much Land Should You Buy if You Want a Horse Property?

If you’re looking to purchase land in North Florida for recreational use related to horses, you’ll need at least 5 acres. This will give you enough space to build a barn, paddocks, and a training area. If you plan on keeping more than one horse, you should consider buying an additional acre or two of land for the extra animals.

How Much Land Should You Buy if You Want Timberland?

If you’re looking to buy land in North Florida for timber production, the amount of land you need depends on what kind of timber you plan to harvest and how often. Generally speaking, commercial-scale operations will require at least 20 acres of land to be economically viable; however, smaller operations may be able to get away with as little as 10 acres.

How Much Land Should You Buy if You Want a Recreational Property?

If you’re purchasing land in North Florida for recreational purposes, the amount of land you buy will depend on what kind of activities you plan to do. If you just want a place to camp and enjoy nature, you may be able to get away with a few acres. If you plan on doing more intensive recreational activities such as hunting, off-roading, or riding ATVs, you’ll probably want at least 10 acres of land for ample space and privacy.
