Even in the North Florida region the chill of the winter season can suck moisture from the air. Drier air can cause wood furniture and things like wood cutting boards inside your home to lose moisture, shrink, and crack. But this can be prevented.
Oiling your wood furniture and cutting boards once monthly throughout the winter, or when they are very dry to the touch, can help stave-off shrinkage and cracking. Keeping these items conditioned is relatively easy and can help extend their useful life, which can be especially important for heirloom, vintage, and cherished pieces.
Follow these three quick steps to help keep your wood furniture and cutting boards in tip-top shape.
Conditioning Wood Furniture
These recommendations are for furniture with oil-and-wax or stain-and-wax finishes, and not for items that are lacquered or painted.
First, remove dust and dirt from the surfaces of your wood furniture using a damp cloth, then wipe them down with a dry cloth to get rid of any remaining moisture.
Using a clean cloth apply wood polish to your pieces and rub it into the surfaces in the direction of the grain.
Give the polish about 30 minutes to penetrate the wood, then buff the surfaces and wipe away excess oil.
Conditioning Wood Cutting Boards
Your very first step is to make sure your cutting boards are clean and completely dry.
Next, using a clean cloth, you’ll apply a food-grade cutting board oil to the surfaces of your boards. Be sure to spread the oil evenly and let it penetrate the surfaces for at least a few hours—or even overnight, if you can.
Wipe away any excess oil on the cutting boards to reveal surfaces that have a sheen—without being moist to the touch.
