Should You Lease Your Land to Hunters for Extra Income?

Should You Lease Your Land to Hunters for Extra Income?

If you’re interested in earning income to supplement your farming operation you might want to consider leasing your land for hunting game, fishing, or birding. Here’s how it works.

Written hunting leases are the basis on which your enterprise will be run and will determine how profitable it can be. A leasing agreement grants a hunter access rights to hunt game animals on your property for a specific period of time. Lessees typically pay an agreed-upon amount per acre or per hunter.

Leases are categorized as either short or long term. Short term leases cover a particular season—for example hunting deer, pheasant, turkey, quail, and trapping. Long-term leases are for one or more years, for one or more species. The lease you offer will depend on three things: the kind of wildlife you have on your property, how hunting may affect your farming operation, and whatever services you may offer the renter.

When deciding whether or not to lease your property to hunters, you should consider: your willingness to allow people on your farming operation, whether or not the leasing program works in conjunction with your other land management objectives, your long-term vision and sustainability goals for your natural resources, and your willingness to obtain the resources you need to get the enterprise started.

Hunting Facts

White-tailed deer are the most popular game species in Florida, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Not only are they highly valued by hunters, but they’re appreciated by outdoor enthusiasts, wildlife photographers, and hikers, too.

The sunshine state is one of the most popular destinations for hunting wild turkey.

Wild hogs can be trapped and hunted year-round with the permission of you, the landowner, according to the commission. The hogs can be caught using cage, box, and corral traps.
