If you’re selling a house in Lake City, whether it’s in a subdivision, on a farm property or somewhere else, there are three things that make it seem old – and that can cost you when it’s time to sell. Here’s what you need to know.
3 Things That Make Your House Seem Old
For most people, making a few minor updates and upgrades to a home can help sell it faster (and for more money). Before you dive into your bank account to improve your house just to sell it, you should talk to your Lake City REALTOR®. In the meantime, check out these three features that can make your house seem old:
- Carpet
- Worn-down window and door frames
- Natural wood cabinetry
Here’s a closer look at each.
Feature #1 That Can Date Your Home: Carpet
Today’s buyers don’t want carpet. They want hardwoods, tile and other solid floors (including cork, concrete and other more modern materials). If your home has carpet in the majority of its rooms, it may be worth ripping it up and replacing it with something a little more current. However, you shouldn’t make this decision until you’ve talked to your REALTOR first. Flooring can be expensive, and you may be better off offering your prospective buyers a credit so they can choose their own flooring.

Feature #2 That Can Date Your Home: Worn-Down Window and Door Frames
Buyers look at what they can see of a house’s “bones,” and they’ll notice if the paint on your window and door frames is peeling. They’ll also notice if the frames are warped or otherwise in poor shape. It may be a good idea to update your window and door frames – if only with a fresh coat of paint – before you put your house on the market.

Feature #3 That Can Date Your Home: Natural Wood Cabinetry
First things first: Brand-new natural wood cabinetry won’t make your house look old – but the orange-tinted, 1990s style wood cabinetry will. If you’re trying to sell your home for top dollar, you may want to invest in new cabinets. But if new cabinets aren’t in the cards for you, that’s okay; you can apply a fresh coat of paint – or sand them down and apply new stain – to modernize their look. You can top it all off with new cabinet and drawer handles.
