Are Green Homes Too Expensive to Buy in North Florida?

Are Green Homes Too Expensive to Buy in North Florida?

Green homes are increasing in popularity, and for good reason – with energy costs skyrocketing and many people looking for ways to reduce their own impact on the planet, they’re a great solution. But are green homes too expensive to buy in North Florida?

Here’s what you need to know.

Are Green Homes Too Expensive to Buy in North Florida?

One of the biggest myths about green homes is that they’re too expensive. Eco-friendly construction is actually very affordable. (And green homes don’t have to be new construction, either – but more on that later.)

Green homes are designed to be ecologically friendly, and you don’t have to have a 100 percent sustainably built house. Technically, a green home doesn’t even have to make a positive environmental impact; it can be considered “green” by having a minimal negative impact, too. Newly constructed green homes typically involve:

  • Using sustainable building materials, or at least recycled materials
  • Building in ample insulation to keep it warmer in winter and cooler in summer
  • Using energy efficient appliances
  • Being strategic about window and door placement to allow more natural light into the home
  • Finding ways to use renewable energy resources, such as solar panels to heat water and generate electricity
  • Embracing water efficiency

What About Making an Existing Home Green?

You can turn nearly any home into a green home, and you can start small. Upgrading roofing systems to those using recycled materials or planting a green roof, which might require new roofing materials on an existing home, can make a tremendous impact on how “green” your home is. Likewise, redoing insulation and ensuring that your roof is properly ventilated can reduce your home’s energy expenditures.

Recycled water systems can help make your home greener, too. So can replacing annual foliage with native perennials so you reduce your water consumption, reduce the size of your lawn and replace it with a garden, or creating a recycling or compost station.
