But what is it, and why do you need it?
What is Homeowners Insurance?
Homeowners insurance is a form of financial protection against disasters and other types of loss. A standard homeowners insurance policy covers the house itself and the things you keep inside it.
It’s typically a “package policy,” which means it can cover damage to the property and your legal responsibility for injuries or property damage you—or your family members—cause to other people. (Often, this includes damage that pets and animals cause.)
Disaster-related damage is often covered by a homeowners insurance policy, too, but there are some exceptions. You need to buy separate coverage for flood and earthquake coverage because they’re not included in a typical homeowners insurance policy.
